Clio Acquires Learned Hand to Enhance Judiciary Strategy

Clio has acquired Learned Hand, an artificial intelligence company dedicated to supporting judges and court systems. This acquisition is part of Clio's broader strategy to expand within the judiciary sector, which has also involved significant recruitment efforts, including the appointment of the former CEO of the American Arbitration Association.

Learned Hand has developed an AI workspace tailored specifically for judges and clerks, integrating with existing court case management systems. This technology is designed to streamline judicial processes and enhance efficiency in court operations.

Clio has highlighted that Learned Hand's technology is already in use across various courts in the United States, including the Superior Court of Los Angeles County, the largest trial court in the nation.

Jack Newton, CEO of Clio, stated that the rapid advancement of AI is transforming the pace and volume of legal work throughout the system. However, he emphasised that such progress is only beneficial if the courts can adapt accordingly. He noted that if legal practitioners and litigants can operate at a significantly faster pace while judges and court teams remain limited by their existing capacities, the resulting bottleneck will shift to the courts.

Newton further explained that Clio has spent nearly two decades developing the necessary technology, legal data, and infrastructure to connect the legal system. The acquisition of Learned Hand presents an opportunity to integrate this foundation directly into the judiciary, helping to modernise and enhance the resilience of courts in line with the evolving demands of the legal landscape.

Shlomo Klapper, CEO of Learned Hand, remarked that the company was founded to address the specific technological needs of judges and clerks, particularly in light of increasing case volumes and complexities. He expressed confidence that, under Clio's umbrella, Learned Hand can scale its offerings to meet the demands of the judiciary effectively.

This acquisition is part of Clio's strategic growth initiative, which has also included the hiring of Pablo Arredondo, co founder of Casetext, as Senior Vice President for the Judiciary, and former Michigan Supreme Court Chief Justice Bridget Mary McCormack, who will serve as General Manager for the Judiciary.
