Coheso Launches Memory to Enhance Institutional Knowledge for In House Legal Teams

Coheso, a pioneer in legal technology, has introduced Memory, a new feature designed to transform resolved legal requests into institutional knowledge for in house legal departments.

Memory identifies decisions made during the resolution of legal matters and proposes them as repeatable positions. Each position includes the reasoning, conditions, exceptions, and prior matters that established it, allowing legal teams to leverage past decisions effectively.

Aditya Rathod, Chief Technology Officer at Coheso, explained that the development of Memory focused on determining which resolved requests should become repeatable guidance and what value those insights would provide to legal departments. The system distinguishes between the specifics of individual matters and the guidance applicable in future situations, ensuring that no proposed changes take effect without attorney approval.

This launch is part of Coheso's broader strategy to expand its suite of AI agents, which already includes tools for redlining contracts against established playbooks. The aim is to create a comprehensive platform that addresses the diverse needs of in house legal teams.

Ned Gannon, CEO of Coheso, highlighted that the impetus for Memory came directly from client feedback. As the operational layer for in house legal teams, Coheso interacts with business users through various platforms like email and Slack, revealing that knowledge capture within legal departments is often inconsistent. While contracts have established playbooks, other areas such as marketing reviews and employment issues frequently lack systematic documentation.

Gannon noted that the timing of this launch aligns with the evolving market landscape, where advancements in AI are shifting the focus towards the decision making layer of legal work. With Memory, legal departments can provide quicker and more consistent responses, retaining institutional knowledge even when attorneys transition out of the organisation.

Technological advancements have enabled this shift in three key areas. First, AI now possesses agentic capabilities, allowing it to process extensive contextual information over multiple steps rather than in a single pass. Second, improvements in AI models enable them to discern relevant insights from large volumes of data, enhancing the decision making process. Third, Coheso has developed a system that consolidates all contextual information related to a request, ensuring that the necessary data is available for effective resolution.

Gannon further elaborated on the distinction between legal and operational judgment, stating that legal judgment pertains to the substantive analysis of risks and positions, while operational judgment involves the execution of legal decisions, including resource allocation and cost considerations. Coheso aims to capture both types of judgment, providing a comprehensive view of decision making processes within legal departments.

The company reports strong growth and engagement with clients across various sectors, including healthcare, technology, finance, and manufacturing. Approximately 52% of their annual recurring revenue is derived from client referrals, indicating a positive reception of their product.

As the legal technology market continues to evolve, Gannon anticipates a division between tools that excel at singular tasks and those that function as comprehensive platforms. He believes that the future will favour systems that integrate workflow and learn from accumulated data, positioning Coheso as a leader in this emerging landscape.
