Harbor Launches Deploy to Address Legal AI Needs Amid Competition from General LLM Providers
Legal tech consultancy Harbor has introduced a new initiative called Deploy, aimed at addressing the specific legal AI needs of its clients. This service will involve embedding specialist teams, including forward deployed engineers, directly within client organisations.
Harbor's Deploy is positioned as a direct competitor to the general large language model (LLM) providers, which have recently begun offering their own forward deployed engineering teams as part of a consultancy service. This development highlights a growing competition between specialist legal consultants and generalist tech firms.
Rudy DeFelice, Global Head of AI Strategy at Harbor, emphasised the necessity of a specialised legal tech consultancy for effective legal AI implementation. He noted that general LLM companies, such as OpenAI, Anthropic, and Microsoft, are expanding their services across multiple industries, but legal workflows and governance present unique challenges that require tailored solutions.
DeFelice stated that the legal sector operates differently from other industries, with specific workflows, confidentiality obligations, and governance structures that a general purpose deployment team may not adequately address. He asserted that Harbor Deploy aims to fill this gap by providing legal native expertise.
The launch of Deploy indicates that Harbor is strategically positioning itself against the growing influence of LLM giants in the legal sector. The need for such a focused offering suggests that the initiatives by OpenAI and Anthropic are having a significant impact, prompting Harbour to enhance its marketing and service delivery.
Harbor's extensive reach includes a global team of over 900 professionals and collaborations with more than 80% of Global 200 law firms and nearly 600 corporate legal departments. However, the emergence of LLM forward deployed teams could pose a threat to Harbor's business model, potentially impacting its ability to sustain its large consultant workforce.
As the legal technology landscape evolves, the competition between specialist and generalist providers is likely to intensify, making it essential for firms like Harbor to adapt and innovate in order to maintain their market position.
