Legora Partners with Blue J to Integrate Tax Data into Legal Platform

Legora has announced a partnership with Blue J, a tax data platform, to integrate tax research capabilities into its legal operating system. The company clarified that this collaboration does not signify a shift away from the legal sector, but rather aims to enhance the resources available to lawyers specialising in tax matters.
According to Legora, the integration will enable eligible customers to query Blue J directly within the Legora platform, receiving answers accompanied by inline citations that link back to the original sources in Blue J. This functionality is designed to streamline the workflow for legal professionals who require tax related information.
The announcement comes amid speculation regarding Legora's potential expansion beyond the legal field, particularly following its alliance with Deloitte. Earlier this year, a member of Legora's team indicated in an interview with OpenAI that the company is exploring opportunities in audit, tax, compliance, and risk management.
Legora is currently seeking a legal engineer with a focus on tax and consulting, which has further fuelled discussions about the company's direction. The job description highlights the role's emphasis on collaboration with tax partners and legal advisory leaders, suggesting a significant overlap between tax and legal functions.
Legora explained that the integration with Blue J was driven by requests from shared customers who wished to access tax research within the same platform they use for other legal tasks. Blue J is utilised by over 6,000 organisations worldwide and is specifically designed for tax research.
The integration is built on the Model Context Protocol, which connects Blue J’s tax research capabilities to the Legora operating system. Users will need subscriptions to both platforms and must log in with their own accounts. Each response provided will include citations to the underlying Blue J sources, subject to content permissions, allowing lawyers to verify the information before incorporating it into their advice or client deliverables.
Benjamin Alarie, CEO and co founder of Blue J, commented on the integration, stating that tax questions arise in various legal matters and that professionals should not have to navigate away from their work to obtain reliable answers. This integration allows tax professionals to access cited analysis directly within their existing workflows.
Bryan Tsao, Chief Product Officer at Legora, added that the collaboration with Blue J enhances the depth of resources available to lawyers, enabling them to check additional secondary sources within their ongoing work. The integration is set to be rolled out first to selected joint customers through early access, with general availability anticipated in November.
