Norm Ai Secures 120 Million Dollars in Series C Funding at 1.2 Billion Dollar Valuation

Norm Ai, a NewMod firm, has successfully raised 120 million dollars in a Series C funding round, achieving a valuation of 1.2 billion dollars. The funding was led by Khosla Ventures, a notable early investor in OpenAI.
Other participants in the funding round include Blackstone, Bain Capital Ventures, Craft Ventures, Coatue, Vanguard, and Jeff Hammes, the former Chairman of Kirkland & Ellis, along with Fenwick LLP. Since its inception less than three years ago, Norm Ai has raised over 260 million dollars.
Norm Ai operates as both a law firm and a technology company. The firm focuses on high stakes legal work by integrating AI engineers with attorneys to develop AI agents that can perform legal tasks. Norm Law, LLP, an affiliated AI native law firm, utilises these AI agents to provide outside counsel services, under the supervision of senior attorneys who oversee and refine the technology.
The operational model of Norm Law is based on outcome pricing rather than hourly billing, allowing the advantages of AI to be passed directly to clients. This structure contrasts with traditional law firms, which typically rely on billable hours, and model providers that depend on token usage.
Norm Ai has attracted a number of senior legal professionals, including Mike Schmidtberger, the former Chair of the Executive Committee at Sidley Austin. Other notable hires include the former Global Head of Real Estate at Sidley Austin, a senior M&A Partner from Ropes & Gray, and legal professionals from various prestigious firms such as Kirkland & Ellis and Latham & Watkins.
Clients of Norm Ai manage assets exceeding 30 trillion dollars and employ the firm's legal AI agents for their in house legal teams. John Nay, founder and CEO of Norm Ai, stated that the firm aims to create a connection between AI and the legal profession, ensuring that legal services align with client needs and human values.
Samir Kaul, Managing Director at Khosla Ventures, emphasised the importance of trust in AI for regulated work, noting that the most discerning clients in the legal sector already depend on Norm Ai. The substantial funding is expected to facilitate growth and expansion, positioning Norm Ai to compete with traditional law firms.
This significant investment is likely to generate increased interest in other NewMod firms, potentially reshaping the legal landscape as they seek to capture market share from established players.
