SQE2 Pass Rate Increases to 83 Percent in April 2026 Sitting

The Solicitors Regulation Authority has announced the results of the latest Solicitors Qualifying Examination 2, with the overall pass rate reaching 83 percent in the April 2026 sitting.

This marks an increase from the 80 percent pass rate recorded in the January sitting, which itself was an improvement from the 78 percent in the previous October and November assessments.

A total of 2,966 candidates participated in the April assessment, which took place from 28 April to 15 May. Among these candidates, first time test takers performed particularly well, achieving a pass rate of 85 percent.

Notably, the data from the Solicitors Regulation Authority revealed a significant disparity in pass rates based on qualifying work experience. Candidates who had not completed any qualifying work experience recorded a 90 percent pass rate, while those who had completed such experience had a pass rate of 73 percent.

The results also indicated a correlation between degree classifications and examination performance. Candidates with a first class degree achieved a pass rate of 92 percent, while those with a 2:1 degree had an 83 percent pass rate. Candidates with a 2:2 degree recorded a markedly lower pass rate of 40 percent.

Furthermore, the results highlighted persistent disparities in pass rates across different ethnic groups. White candidates and those from mixed or multiple ethnic backgrounds recorded an 88 percent pass rate. In contrast, Asian or Asian British candidates had an 82 percent pass rate, while Black or Black British candidates had a significantly lower pass rate of 67 percent.

These findings may prompt further discussions regarding the factors influencing examination performance and the ongoing efforts to enhance equity within legal education and training.
