Thomson Reuters Launches Thomson 1.0 an Open Weights Legal AI Model
Thomson Reuters has officially launched Thomson 1.0, an open weights large language model (LLM) specifically designed for the legal sector. The model has been developed in house, leveraging the company's extensive legal content and editorial expertise.
Steve Hasker, CEO of Thomson Reuters, discussed the significance of Thomson 1.0 in a recent interview. He explained that the model was created following the acquisition of a startup founded by former Google DeepMind scientists, which was focused on developing a legal specific LLM.
After nearly two years of development, Thomson 1.0 has been evaluated against leading frontier models and is reported to outperform many of them in both general and legal tasks. Hasker noted that the model's performance is particularly impressive given that it has only utilised a fraction of Thomson Reuters' legal content.
The launch is seen as a major advancement for the legal AI sector, providing law firms and in house legal teams with new options for enhancing their operations. Hasker emphasised that the model will offer significant benefits in terms of accuracy, speed, and cost efficiency.
Thomson 1.0 is expected to integrate with Thomson Reuters' existing suite of legal tools, including Co Counsel and Westlaw Advantage. The company plans to expand the model's functionality to include bulk document analysis and other legal research applications.
Additionally, Thomson Reuters is exploring the concept of sovereign AI, which would allow law firms to run the Thomson model within their own secure environments. This would enable firms to protect their intellectual property while benefiting from the tailored capabilities of the model.
Hasker highlighted the importance of maintaining high standards of accuracy and reliability in legal AI, stating that the model is designed to provide deterministic answers essential for legal professionals. The company aims to ensure that its AI solutions meet the rigorous demands of the legal industry.
