Tomorrow Is Census Night. Make Sure You’re Counted.

A quick reminder to the LawUno community: Australia’s 2026 Census takes place tomorrow, Tuesday 11 August.

Every five years, the Census provides one of the most detailed snapshots of who we are, where we live and how Australia is changing.

And it matters more than many of us probably realise.

The information collected by the Australian Bureau of Statistics helps determine how billions of dollars in government funding are allocated and informs decisions around hospitals, schools, transport, infrastructure, aged care and other essential services.

For the legal profession, the data also provides a fascinating picture of Australia's workforce, including occupations, qualifications, employment and how and where Australians are working.

The 2026 Census also introduces some significant changes.

For the first time, it will collect information on gender and sexual orientation, while Australians can now nominate up to four ancestries rather than two. The changes are designed to provide a more accurate picture of an increasingly diverse Australia.

Most households can complete the Census online using the instructions sent by the ABS, with paper forms also available.

And if you've already received your instructions, you don't necessarily need to wait until tomorrow. You can complete it now provided you know where everyone in your household will be on Census night.
